Replacement dwelling within a Conservation Area

The underlying design intention throughout the project was the necessity to respect the architectural importance of the new building and how it relates to its immediate setting and surrounding agricultural countryside context. In preparing ideas for a replacement dwelling consideration of simple forms and arrangements related to farm buildings and rural areas was conducive to planning policies and responded to the site's relationship with the local countryside.

Only on entering the building is its true identity revealed. Light and airy, the notion of inside and outside space is maximised to produce an open and transparent home that reflects the sites levels and extended views. Simple finishes and materials (conducive to the surrounding context reflecting a traditional Kentish vernacular style) have been combined to produce a building of real merit that enhances the site without detracting from its current rural simplicity. The building has been constructed to achieve a Level 3 for the Code for Sustainable Homes.
